As Cavalier Youth Football enters its 11th Season we reflect on the many wonderful young men and families that have chosen to associate with our program. Only heaven knows the great potential and future accomplishments of the hundreds of boys who have sat under our coaches each fall since Cavalier Youth Football began in 1999. The opportunity to have an influence for Christ on tomorrow’s finest is an awesome responsibility and one that we take very seriously. The directors and coaches begin preparing for the upcoming season as soon as the current season ends, with an extensive evaluation of the previous year. Feedback is sought and received from coaches, parents and participants and is diligently reviewed. The program is constantly seeking to improve itself year to year while maintaining its primary mission: TO INTRODUCE YOUNG MEN AND THEIR FAMILIES TO THE SAVING KNOWLEDGE OF JESUS CHRIST THROUGH MENTORING AND INSTRUCTION, UTILIZING THE GAME OF FOOTBALL. If Cavalier Youth Football was only about winning football games we could have merely replicated the 2006 game plan. That year, CYF teams were represented in all 7 age divisions and won an unprecedented 5 City Championships. For the first time in SPAR history the city championship game for 7 year olds pitted two teams from the same organization vying for the title with two CYF teams playing against each other. Instead of relying on our previous success, we evaluated, improved and expanded the product. As the reputation of Cavalier Youth Football grew, so did the demand for participation. In order to meet the demands of the community, involve more children and therefore extend the MINISTRY of Cavalier Youth Football to a greater number, the decision to have multiple teams at the same age group was made in 2007. This was a challenge and also an opportunity that our families willingly accepted. Many capable men stepped forward and volunteered to coach and we set out to effectively equip them. In order to insure that CYF provided a consistent and high quality product, Cavalier Youth Football Coach Certification was begun. These coaches are incredible men to begin with. Yet to coach in the program they must meet certain certification requirements. An initial one-on-one interview with the directors ensures that every coach understands and conforms to the unique mission and values of CYF. Each coach confirms their personal relationship with Christ. Every coach is required to complete extensive classroom training and on-field applications. Certification classes are held every Monday night in February. All sessions are video-recorded and available for review to ensure optimal learning. Opportunites to demonstrate mastery of the information are provided through discussion, Q & A, written testing and on-the-field application. Finally, coaches are required to demonstrate the application of their football knowledge and teaching principals they have learned, before the season begins, by participation in Cavalier Youth Football Camp. The annual CYF football camp thus serves a dual purpose; as a training time for new coaches and to teach technique and skills to players in attendance. This also allows the directors to observe new coaches in action. Typically 70-75 coaches participate in the CYF Coach Certification annually. As mentioned, this is required for all first time coaches, but most returning coaches elect to participate to refine their knowledge. In 2008, the CYF Continuing Coaches Education program was begun. This is typically a half day of advanced topic material for returning experienced CYF coaches who have already met the initial CYF Coach Certification requirements. A final brief review of material is held a few days prior to CYF Camp each June in our CYF Coaches Clinic. This serves as a prelude to the camp's activities and a time for fellowship and finalizing staffs for the upcoming season. We believe this level of committment to place well-trained, competent, caring Christian coaches in direct contact with players and parents distinguishes our program from any other. This requires an extensive amount of planning, preparation and participation, but we feel your child is worth every minute of it. Parents, we hope you appreciate the considerable commitment of time and effort made by the men who will teach your boys, months before the season will ever begin. We encourage you to say something positive to them any time you have the chance. |
